At FIFTHQTR we understand that transitioning and retired players can experience a sense of loneliness and abandonment from the game they once loved.

The competition, camaraderie, structure and support they were once accustomed to is no longer there.

This is when a loss of identity and purpose can make transitioning and retired players vulnerable.

As a result, poor decision making can lead to social issues including alcohol, drugs, gambling, employment, financial and relationship problems. These issues can further develop into mental illness such as depression, anxiety and sadly suicide.

Concussion related brain trauma can develop into degenerative diseases such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy ( CTE ), Dementia , Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

At FIFTHQTR we understand that these issues can have a huge impact on partner, families and parents. Too often there is no support network, nowhere to go for families to seek help.

We are not competing with the AFL, AFLPA or AFL Clubs.

FIFTHQTR Foundation is an independent not for profit organisation that understands the challenges and issues that confront past players. When you don’t know where to turn, we are here to help you.

The care and wellbeing of past players is at the core of what we do.

  • Facilitate access to peer support (case study management) to develop individual plans to transitioning or retired players to adapt and support their next chapter.
  • Facilitate access to medical support to past players who are impacted by concussion and other related health and pain management issues.
